Growing your Own Drugs
Yes we watched Mr Wong and he was right when he expounded the joys of the healing power of many herbs easily grown or even picked from the hedgerows for use as great healers for many problem skin conditions and health issues.
James? programme simply compounded and endorsed the work that Paul has been doing here on his Herb Farm for many years growing traditionally used herbs for use in tinctures, ointments and oils and more recently giving birth to the Herbfarmacy Organic Skincare range. See "Stop Press" for more news! Balms Old and NewPaul reflects....
My dad passed away sadly in April, and I was sorting through things in his house with my sister the other day and found a pot of green ointment he used for chapped hands which we remember from childhood.
Examining the ingredients, I discovered the herbal component to be none other than Marshmallow which we now use as a soothing and healing component (with 3 others) in our Skin Rescue Balm. Marshmallow also features in many Herbfarmacy products as a superlative skin softener and moisturiser.
When I started using it in ointments, some 10 years ago, I had no idea that this herb had featured in our home medicine cupboard all those years ago... Farm News .... Bunny Patrol
It has been an interesting spring this year with some beautiful weather, bringing dry conditions and cool nights which slowed the growth of newly established crops. With the recent rainfall conditions have improved, but we are still having trouble with rabbits! Although we partially net some crops (especially Echinacea), they have taken a liking to the new Marshmallow and Mullein patch. They dig up the plant plugs, and nibble away its young leaves. We are hoping a mixture of disrupting their feeding routine (by chasing them away!) more strategic netting and the accelerating growth of the plants as temperatures rise, will win out in the end.
This Season's Herb - Cornflower
We have just added another herb to our trials this year - Cornflower. This stunning annual was common years ago in cornfields, before the days of herbicides and more aggressive varieties of cereals. It is related to Calendula, and has bright blue flowers. Watch this space to find out how well it grows, and what we use it for.
